Introduction to Taiping, Perak. Malaysia

This website is dedicated to those who were born in Taiping as well as those who have resided and visited Taiping. It aims to inform you The best of what Taiping have to offer.

Broadcasting Taiping to the world on historic and new sites! Designed by Taiping faithful who enjoys the life in this great town. While jogging up Maxwell Hill, one of the resident said do you notice that the air is fresh and different from the city? I paused a while to have a small thought and really feel appreciated with the freshness. A great place for cheap and good food. Lodging is withing 5 minutes walk. Some of the pictures are from other Taiping Sites whom I believe won't mind me using it. I am sure you can also use mine. No one site is perfect. We strife for perfection! BTW, I will add more information and pictures when there are new suggestions. Hope it brings good memories back to you!

Taiping is a beautiful town situated in the state of Perak in MALAYSIA.Formerly known as Klian Pauh, it was renamed Taiping to commemorate the end of the Larut War in 1874. With the signing of the Pangkor Treaty on the 20th of January 1874, Taiping emerged to be the major town in Perak.Taiping comes from the Chinese word Tai-Peng which means ETERNAL PEACE. And indeed with the decision of the British government to make Taiping into their administration center, the once slow-paced town has been transformed into a busy and developed town compared to the others in that era.

Together with progress comes a string of historical firsts that has made Taiping into one of the oldest town in Malaysia.Today, more than 100 years later, Taiping unfolds the history of the making of this modern nation. Taiping was once a thriving mining town and used to be the capital of Perak. Its disused mining pools have been cleverly turned into the beautiful and famous Taiping Lake Gardens.

Other attractions include the hill resort Bukit Larut (Maxwell Hill); Taiping Zoo, which was the first zoo in Malaysia. Taiping receives the most rainfall making it the wettest town in Peninsular Malaysia. The average annual rainfall is about 4,000mm in Taiping while the peninsula’s average is 2,000mm – 2,500mm. How to get there:Taiping is 88km from Penang, 80km from Ipoh and 302km from Kuala Lumpur. It is about an hour’s drive from Ipoh via the highway. Penang is just 1 hour drive up north. There are frequent bus services from all major towns in Peninsular Malaysia and even from Singapore. But if you prefer, you can get there by train.

Taiping schools

Located at Station Road in Taiping town, the King Edward VII School was formerly known as the Central School. Opened in 1883, it was the first English school in the state. It got a name-change when it reopened in 1905 and has remained one of the most scenic schools in the state, thanks to the 100-year-old Flame of the Forest trees on the grounds. Did you know that Taiping breeds a lot of tigers? Blame it on the school lah. lol. Click below to see the School's rich history.

There's a world class band as well. KE 7 has a great school song as well. Some call it the "Tiger School". There is a real stuffed tiger somewhere inside the school. Used to be in the library. Motto is Magni Nominis Umbra. Some say, "Once a Tiger, ALWAYS a Tiger!" (Not Thai girl ya. Cheh.). A bit of hormone injection. Was studying there during the beginning 80s. Many great teachers were there as well. Among Longest Serving ones are Mr Long Heng Hua (Principal until 1984) who came up with "Greater Than Before" slogan, Mr Ravinder Singh (Used to be teased as Junjung; hope you don't mind. You kena whack from him?) and Mr Thong Yoke Seng (Afternoon principal), Mr Yeow (Badminton Coach), Mr Jayapalan, Mr Foo, Mr Lim, Mr Tan Kok Siang, Pak Razak, Mr Leow and the popular Ms Ong (sisters). King Edward VII Primary School (I). Many great Tigers studied here. There is a great badminton court where I used train regularly during the mid 80s. Great sound while smashing. BOOM BOOM Phong Phong sound. lol.

Convent Secondary Girl School. Also many great ladies besides TMGS school where educated here. Some of the boys like me used to sneak in to play badminton at their open air courts. Kinda showing off to the girls. Gatal ni. Are you one of them also?

Darul Ridzuan Secondary School. Located near Aulong. Some of my great friends are from this school. Has a nick name called "Ta tou lei wan"; meaning hit until you're dissy. Also have a great nick-song like "Gotta Move On" disco song from the 80s. Are you dancing now?

Hua Lian High School.One of the Famous Chinese Secondary School. One of the first school to have 3 badminton courts. Some Taiping Open Badminton events were held here initially.

Hua Lian Primary School near Aulong. All the great chinese educated studied here. Use to have challenges between HL 1 and HL 2.

Iconic Taiping

Some of Taiping famous landmarks. Hotel prices are as cheap as rm$70 a night. All the sight seeing areas are withing 5 minutes drive. You can even cycle around the town. Good exercises and keep your good heart healthy and pumping. Links to the map locations are provided.

The Perak museum is located along Jalan Museum, it was built in 1883. The country’s oldest museum has displays almost 3000 artefacts on zoology, pre-history, economy and ethnology. It contains an impressive collection of archaeological treasures like ancient weapons, aboriginal implements and ornaments that reflect Perak’s rich historical heritage. Half day visit.

Statue of Col. Robert Sandilands Frowd Walker, on the grounds of the Perak Museum. Col Walker was the British Resident of Selangor and Perak who was much admired by both the Malay and Chinese community for settling labour troubles as well as for his hospitality.

The great Historic Museum. First in Malaysia.

British 2nd world war memorial. One the way to Maxwell hill. No one is discriminated. All races are buried and recognised here. Just go there and see it nearer. It will warm your heart and feel proud to be in a multi-racial society. Pass to your friends. This is what Malaysia is all about.

One for all and all for one. This is the true team spirit.

The Taiping Zoo is still the best in Malaysia. Night Safari is also the first and best. However, it can still be improved. Interesting news about the zoo is that, it claimed to have the biggest crocodile in the land. The museum also claimed that it has the bull elephant skeleton that derailed a train in the past with full speed impact! Singapore Zoo is good, but of course, it is more expensive due to the amount of money invested.

Taiping was formerly the British administrative centre in the state during colonial times. The town was built after the feuds over the tin mines of Larut had been put down. In those days, tin mining was a lucrative business and exporting the ore out of state was a common activity. The Taiping Railway Station was built in 1885 to facilitate the transfer of tin to Port Weld in Penang which was then the main point for shipping it out of the country. Before the “iron horse” came into service for this purpose, elephants were used to carry the ore along jungle trails. With the arrival of the locomotive in Malaya – this was the first train put into service here – travel time was greatly shortened to a few hours from two to three days. Did you know that the current site of the town’s railway station is not its original location? The old station formerly sat on the land which is today occupied by the King Edward VII Primary School. When the railway line was extended at the turn of the 20th century, the station was moved to accommodate the expansion. From then till the 1980s, the tracks remained at the old site until they were removed, and the platforms dismantled to make way for roads.

Taiping Train Station during those good old days. Great memories of family reunion and departures from this area. Balik Kampung and Going away from kampung to find a better life. So Romantic.

The Well known Chinese Recreation Club. Has been enhanced since 90s to have pools and more facilities. They even have chess competition here. Breeding of great minds.

Esplanade. A place for people to play football, hockey and rugby. I played here representing clubs like Kwang Tung and Sanyo. Some great football matches played here with the likes of Penjara and Polis. Behind it is the Taiping Town Hall which also hosted a few of Taiping Badminton Tournaments. The famous ones like the Mens Doubles Olympic Silver Medallist Cheah Soon Kit played here in Taiping a number of times. Even Datuk Lee Chong Wei came to Taiping to play in exhibition games.

Used to be Cathay Cinema before the 90s. Now a video game arcade or what else. Time changed.

Used to be Lido Cinema till the 1980s. People packed in like sardines to get tickets. James Bond movies, back to the future and starwars were shown here. Used to have a famous laksa shop inside.

The famous Young Man Hindu Association Hall. Many great local badminton players played here. 2 great courts. Need to maintain lah deh. lol

Place to visit in Taiping

The great cool waters of Burmese Pool. Becoming more commercial now. Hopefully those administrators can keep it clean always. Many people drowned during rainy seasons due to strong water current. Never swim in a river during or after rain! Need to walk upstream about 5 minutes from the parking entrance. If you drive from lake garden, turn right just after Kamal Lodge. There should be a sign to Burmese pool. This is a nice place to relax and have a cool dip. Something will schrink after jumping in of course... right? (sejuk2) lol.

Taiping lake garden is a MUST visit place. In fact, it is the Icon of this lovely Taiping town. Just drive around and also walk around it. The scenery will captivate your heart. Felt like a paradise. There are so many nice and historic places here. Don't forget the usual popular places like the Taiping Zoo (Best in Malaysia), Night Safari (First in Malaysia), Museum, Maxwell Hill (Bukit Larut) and the famous foods. This is certainly a place for gastronomic orgy.

Taiping Lake Garden - Clouds edited (Nice ka?). If you need photographers for your wedding or other business, can contact me lah. I refer you some good ones.

Bukit Merah Resort. Nice place with modern water fun park for children (spoilt brats right?). People fish for Arowana here as well. Try your luck lah. Windy and serene. About half hour drive north from Taiping. Check the map. Don't overshoot to Penang ya. Batu Kurau also have very famous award winning durians. I eat till cannot tahan. Even CEOs of big company q for it. I sapu first before they get it. Leave them with shells only. lol.
The Fireman Hives. BOMBA as some call it. Where you are on fire, just call 999. They will arrive in a whisk. Centrally located. Just a little Icon. Everything can be reached within 5 minutes. There's a famous food court just behind it.
Famous St Louis Catholic Church. Lots of wedding bells rang here. Just next to the famous convent school. hmm I wonder why some of the Catholic churches specifically don't really improve their sound system... Time to upgrade bro...

The All Saints Church which is the oldest in Malaysia.

One of the famous hotel near new club which is close to the lake garden (Casuarina Inn). Many functions held here as well. Many people used to jog pass this area which is close to the club. Many wedding photo sessions taken here. Nice columns.

The famous Taiping Clock Tower Icon in the heart of the town.

Other hotels you can pick. Cheap la... (from singapore point of view la, aha..). Lagenda Hotel: Old Rest House converted into hotel Hotel Furama at 30, Jalan Peng Loong near to lake garden or Cathay cinema. Sri Malaysia Hotel at the lake garden near Taiping Prison (Masuk jail kawan). Legend Inn near Convent School or at city centre. Panorama Hotel located in the middle of the city opposite the famous old clock tower. There is a new hotel near the Lake Garden by the name of Flemington with a sky-bar being the latest hit in Town.

Most famous Chinese Kwang Tung Association. Used to be famous for their Football team and Tae Kwon Do lessons. National champions are bred here. Dun pray pray. Lantern show is also available during Moon cake festival period. Sept-Oct. Ask the locals on where it is held.

The original purpose of the Taiping Public Library building was as a bank. Formerly the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China (now the Standard Chartered Bank), which first opened a branch in Taiping in 1888, this building was later converted into the public library. The public library is located at Kota Road. Below is the Historic Land office which is near to it.

Other fresh rivers or small waterfalls would be Austin pool or Batu 1/2. Nice to have picnic there. Tapau some spicy food and drinks there. Check out the real cool coronation swimming pool as well. Fresh water pool. Everything just shrink when you dive in. lol. Children pool is available. Suggestion; they should build a waterfall in there. Below is the Austin Pool. Slightly smaller and deeper. About 10 minutes walk into the jungle.

Quite deep pool here. Careful if you are not a strong swimmer. 24 footer pool. Need me to coach you? lol.
Butterfly stroke kacang putih ok? lol.
Sounds funny, but believe it or not. This is now the hottest place for prosperity. People are flocking in from Singapore, Thailand and the world over just to get a touch on these boars. Maybe Phua Chu Kang will come one day. The Indian temple called Om Sakthi Sri Jada Muneesvarar Alayam is at Zenith Park. It will appear in the evenings only.

The claim is one touch and you will prosper. lol. So, you can try lah, no need to work already. Can retire there. Once you make good money... give me 10% will do lah... I recommend you mah...right? lol. Oh. This is in Kamunting area. Some of my buddies stayed there and one of them really kena toto leh. You should be able to see Tesco or shopping centres along the way.

Taiping Food (Gastronomic) places

With the abundance of good food in Taiping, you have to stay here for at least 3-4 days just to finish them. Life will be incomplete if you don't try all of them. lol.

Below is the famous Golden Corner makan place near Jalan Pasar. Click on the picture for the location. Only open in the evenings. If you dono where or what to eat, ask me lor...

The famous food is KueyTeow Soup, WanTon Mee dry, chicken feet, Curry me. Kopi/Teh Peng.There are other nice restaurants available in the evenings as well. The curry fish head in BBQ is good. Slightly more higher end compare to those hawker food stalls.

This is where you can have some good food for breakfast and lunch time.

The Prima restaurant. Famous with WonTonMee dry, Poh Piah and Chicken rice.

Below is a picture of Siang Malam at night. Next to KFC. It tends to get crowded. Good with nasi lemak, mee rebus and ckt.

Taiping is famous with food. Will update more when there are feedbacks. Enjoy the makan ya. Kenyang2 and sedap2. Warning. Can get food orgy tau tak? Dun blame me ya.
There's a saying that if you come to Taiping and haven't tried the food, you haven't visited Taiping. Faham ka?? lol.

The name is Larut Matang hawker centre (chai chee). Quite a good varieties here. The Mee Rebus, Chicken Rice, Fried Kyaw Tiaw, Kuehs, Murtabak, Kopi-peng, bubor-cha-cha (dance la) and the Ice Kachang are good. Some of the kuehs and noodles below. Yummeeeyyy.... tak boleh tahan.. lol.

Tupai "Chee Cheong Fun". Unique in Malaysia. Available in the morning. In the evening, there are also lots of good eats. Located just behind the BOMBA. To name a few; the good ones are claypot chicken rice, wanton mee, curry mee, sotong rojak and the soya bean drinks. See below. Cannot tahan right?

Famous Taiping Popiah. Available at Prima Food Center. Famous CKT in Taiping is at Jalan Pasar, restaurant Tai Chen. Click for map.

Siang Malam Place, just next to KFC. Popular place to eat for supper. Sad to say soon to be demolished (pending). Famous for mee rebus and curry noodles and wan tan mee in the evening.

Above the the Pokok Assam Market Icon. The eatery is next to it.

Pokok Asam hawker centre. Popular for breakfast fried noodles, chee cheong fun, apum, koay kak, hum chim peng, roti prata and rat noodle. In the afternoon or evening, there are asam laksa. The restaurant beside pokok assam basket ball court serves nice food, especially the bread curry prawn.
The 200-rumah murah II-113/Lorong 7 side also used to have Sim-Bueh noodle stall. Their Chilli is fantastic. When I was a kid, used to eat them till my pimples popped out. Heard it moved to KL already. Anyone know where he is now? I used to stay opposite them at the corner house where they have CKT now. They lady is called Ah Sim. Go try lah. Google map or GPS (4.83352,100.744516).

Kamunting, Aulong or Asam Kumbang areas also have.

Below is the dried springy Wan Ton Mee Taiping style. It is also nice to add curry or asam laksa gravy into the likes of dried beehoon-mee or koayteow-mee. Some new wave eating style recommended by my old buddies. lol.

Below is the Best Chendol in Taiping. Some prefer Ansari Chendol. Similar lah.

Next time the boss must give me free chendol lah... so much publicity already. Maybe I can advertise Extreme Power rackets there. lol. Click here for map.

One of the best cendol in Taiping just behind St George Secondary School. Take the most expensive one la. Sure won't regret one. Sedap.

Can buy the Rojak paste also. Yummy drink.

Famous Luk-Luk (Lok-lok) and Rojak near old Rex cinema above. Famous in Malaysia as well.

Below is the food from Kakak makan place at Jalan Pasar. Normally packed in the morning. For evening rounds, you can go opposite Golden corner; also as good. Add lots of chillies to get 'high' fren. No chilli, no shiok... Constipation is only temporary. lol

Sumptious Taiping Curry mee.

Below is the famous Prawn Mee or Mee Banjir Udang Kuala Sepetang (Port Weld). Just ask around when you are there (Choose either MakTeh or MakJah). West of Taiping. Address is batu 9, Jalan Kuala Sepetang. (Some nice seafood chinese restaurant are here as well. Curry mee is famous. In the afternoon only.). There's an eco park nearby for you to learn about making charcoal. Nice stuff.

Huge or humungus? Take the $rm11 big plate.
This place below is famous in Kamunting. You will need to pass the cross street at the traffice light. This is what it means my putting curry or laksa gravy on top of the dry noodles.

Here's a little secret diary of me in Taiping. Follow lah if you can tahan. lol.

Go jalan2 at Lake Garden and blow whistle at leng lui... Swee Char bor... Tayang jogging when people watching, when no one watching, jalan la... che..lol

You know what I used to eat in the morning? You will faint my friend. Be prepared to lie down on the floor with your legs up. It is important to have a balance life. If you eat hard, exercise hard. There is no short cut friend.

Breakfast, eat Chee cheong fun then go for koayteow soup ala kopi-peng at kakak restaurant, then walk to market for koay kak with lor mai fun and apums. Wait till u see my tummy. One big muscle. lol However, due to the availability of Taiping Hill, it shall not grow any bigger. Don't panic; everything is under control. lol. Life is short lah. So, just whack lah.

For lunch, go for chicken rice at Kok Beng or Prima food court. The wanton mee is also good. Used to be from Tai Chin (the famous popiah restaurant).

Then rest and prepare run up the Maxwell hill about 3pm. Do have a stretching and warmup first. Else kena cramps pulak. This is a physical orgy. Run consistently up the hill and you will sweat as if you have taken a bath. Enjoy the cool stream there. Suck up all the fresh air and enjoy the scenery at Pondok 2. It is a climax. Chat with locals. You should be able to see die hard walkers there.

You can take your time to walk down and jump into the famous first Coronation pool for a cool dip. Enjoy the malay laksa after that. ahhh.

For dinner, indigestion issue (siaran tergendala sebentar), dono what to whack. Just go to Tupai food court and eat Claypot rice, duck rice and drink the rich soya bean milk or sugar cane juice. If too early, can visit Mr Chan sports nearby (go talk ayam there), send my regards to him. All badminton kakis will know each other.

Then play badminton with other badminton kakis. Seen my other websites yet?

Supper, go to Golden Corner opposite Wing Kong Goldsmith at Jalan Pasar and sapu Kari Mee, KoayTeow Soup, Wonton Mee (tambah chillies and order Chicken feet also can lah) and a glass of cooling home made drinks. Some call it foursome. lol.

Alternatively, goto SiangMalam to eat mee rebus and nasi lemak. Then sleep like a u know what...

Such is a great, enjoyable, simple life in Taiping. For the next day, you may try different combinations. Don't get jealous kawan. Get even. Follow lah. Yummilicious right? lol.

One thing you may not regret is regretting for not doing it. It is meant to confuse you. lol.

In mid July, durian season is on, you can buy a RM7.90 coupon (will always go up due to inflation), one could eat as many durians as one pleases during the durian fest at the Bukit Gantang (north-bound) rest area of the North and South Expressway.

For other popular halal places, you can try the famous mee goreng doli, mamak stalls at Railway station, KE Corner layan western food; lots of people there. My school football colleague owns the place. There are other places with nice food. Keep dropping in for updates...Thanks to those contributed. A cool place. Good for those who like fresh air and exercise. Many people walk and jog up the hill. Good for fitness. Recommended for fitness and bush walking enthusiasts. There is a conventional road going up as well as short cuts. Do take advice or follow the regulars when you want to try the short cuts. There are people serving free drinks on pondok 2 and 3. You will be a very fit fella if you walk up regularly. King Edward 7 school has a school song where it says "King Edward’s will live forever, As long as the Taiping Hills stand..." Enjoy!

There are bungalows galore on Bukit Larut. Visitors can have their pick of the Bukit Larut Rest House (3,400 ft), Beringin (3,400 ft), Cendana (3,700 ft), Gunung Hijau Rest House (3,650 ft), Cempaka Bungalow (3,738 ft), and Tempinis Bungalow (3,750 ft).

Rates for single and double rooms range from RM8.00 and RM15.00 in both the Rest House. Rates may change over time. Inflation fren.

Every 31 August which is the Merdeka Day will have something special in Taiping. Just like this running competition. There are also Fishing Competition and Orchid show in Taiping.

Latest news: The state government has approved in principle the construction of a RM60 million (S$25m) cable car system at Bukit Larut in Taiping. Jan 19, 2009.

The hill is a haven for birds such as the rhinoceros hornbill, large moths and butterflies, beetles, monkeys and Pope's Pit Viper. You can also see beautiful Tulip flowers on the links. A visitor will take 11 minutes to reach the 1,250m peak of the resort from the bottom of the mountain, compared with the 30-minute, 13km ride via four-wheel-drive or government Land Rover. Taiping is growing my friend!! Another thought is to preserve the area is to build this at another hill instead. Away from water catchment areas. Romantic place as well.

From the entrance, looking upwards. This is where you start jogging or pacing. There will be some fresh little water falls along the way to cool you down. Really cool place. The short cut trail is on the left. Better don't go during rainy days, later lightning strike pulak.. lol.

Pondok 1 stop or resting area. Used to have a small hut. Not sure if the authorities are going to put it back. Good for shelter though since Taiping is an extremely wet area. It rains a lot. When you jog instead of walking up consistently, I am sure you'll be pretty tired. You should be drenched. Shiok rite? I did it and you can too!

Okay... Pondok number 2 approaching. Majority of the runners stop here to rest before going down. Some fitter ones will proceed further up from here. Careful, lots of mosquitoes. Authorities should clean up the place to avoid dengues.

Famous Taiping Coronation Swimming Pool. If you want a cool dip of fresh (non clorined) water, this is where to be. Just jump in. Definitely no clorine issue. Pure cool fresh water. The picture below is old. Latest renovation was in beginning of 2009 and looks nice. This is where some great swimmers display or boast their superior ability to splash around. Eg. showing off their cool v-shaped body or showing off some butterfly stroke to impress some ladies (lots of pretty ladies in Taiping lah, tau ka?? lol). After swimming, you should try the malay laksa or rojak just outside the pool. Some people selling fresh fruits there as well.

Note: It has been renovated in 2009. Price has gone up.

Top of maxwell hill. Cool and nice place to stay over night. Some said, it's haunted. Recommended to try it. You'll need to book early as this is a very popular stay over spot. Seram... hehe.. There are also some beautiful flowers like tulips available on Maxwell Hill. Should recommend them to plant more varieties of flowers. A paradise for photographers. Some even do bird watching. Not the orang jantan one of course.

Taiping Lake Garden

Now this is the main refreshing event... Taiping Lake Garden.

The Best of Taiping Lake Garden. The Taiping Lake Gardens is the biggest urban parkland in Malaysia. At 222 acres, the gardens is about as big as Taiping Old Town, such was the size of recreational comfort enjoyed by the folks of Taiping today. Within it is housed massive ponds, lakes, and reputably, the best zoological gardens in Malaysia.

To trace the beginnings of the Taiping Lake Gardens, we have to go back 130 years in time, to around 1880. At that time, there was no gardens, no joggers, and every Chinese man in Taiping town is connection with the preoccupation of extracting one particular ore from the earth: tin. You won't see a single tin dredge in or anywhere near Taiping today, but 130 years ago, Taiping town (at that time known as Larut) was the world's biggest exporter of tin. The high price of tin in the world market propelled enterprenuers to descend on Taiping. As of now, this lake is the most famous natural lake in Malaysia. Be proud to enjoy it.
